Kindergarten Registration

Kindergarten Registration

Connecticut now requires students to be 5 years old on or before September 1 to start kindergarten.  If your child will be turning 5 on or before September 1, 2026 and you are planning to have them attend public school in Hebron, begin the registration process here.  A link will then be sent to you to complete registration.  You will be required to upload your child’s Birth Certificate and two address verification documents.  One address verification must be a mortgage document, lease/rental agreement or property tax statement.  The other address verification must be a cable bill, utility bill or internet bill.  Please contact the Gilead Hill Office at 860-228-9458 with any questions.

*Students currently enrolled in our preschool program do not need to register for kindergarten as this process happens automatically.

Early Admission to Kindergarten

The legislation also allows a school district to admit a child who has not turned 5 by September 1 of the school year if 1) the parent/guardian makes a request in writing and 2) the school district conducts an assessment of the child to ensure that admittance is developmentally appropriate.

If your child was born between September 2, 2021 and January 1, 2022, and you would like your child to be considered for early entry to kindergarten for the 26-27 school year, please see the process outlined below:

  • Complete this form, which will satisfy the requirement for a written request, by March 1.
  • An in-person assessment to determine student readiness for kindergarten will be scheduled for a date in the month of May.  Your child must attend this assessment for the waiver request to be considered.  During the assessment, your child will participate both in a group setting and in a one-to-one session with a staff member. To be granted a waiver, children must meet or exceed 5-year-old benchmarks across the domains of literacy and language, numeracy, physical motor, adaptive skills, and social/emotional development.
  • After the assessment, families will receive written notification of the district’s decision. Please note that the district’s decision is final, and families should wait to complete kindergarten registration until the decision has been received.

*Because only a small number of waivers were approved for the 2025–2026 school year, we highly encourage families to also apply for our preschool lottery (if your child is not already enrolled in our preschool program) as an additional option, should the waiver not be granted.  The lottery application can be found on our website here.
